Kai “KAITO” [B.]
Male, He/Him, 16-18 in lore, born 11/16/XX, Scorpio, INTJ.
Character warnings: Self harm, physical abuse + neglect, heavy drinking (his father, not him)
Kai is a cis male, and is bisexual. However, he doesn’t gain crushes that often.
Kai is also autistic, with insomnia* and, mostly likely some type of CPTSD*. He has difficulty with odd textures, things being too dirty, crowds of people, loud people, yelling, fights, confrontation, and booze.
Appearance wise, Kai is 5’11ft tall, with shaggy brown hair in his dark brown eyes. He has eyebags from a lack of sleep, and his skins on the pale side. Hes rather lean, and somewhat fit. His skin, however, is rather battered. Small ‘scratches’ from glass scarring his back, bruises that have never quite faded on his skin, and self inflicted wounds covering his wrists and his upper thighs. However, despite the quantity, the scarring isn’t awful, due to Kai taking good care cleaning every wound afterwards to ‘calm down’.
On a lighter note, at ~15, when he moved in with his grandma, he dyed his hair purple. The ends still have some of the color, but its mostly grown out since then.
His choice of clothing include: A purple hoodie. Lillian gifted it to him once, and he’s never taken it off since. Not literally, as he does wash it, but he wore it until it got too small, and then Lillian bought him a new one to wear. He pairs it with jeans, sometimes sweats, and sneakers. Wears a plain tshirt, tanktop, or longsleeve underneath depending on the weather.
Kai loves technology, baking and sweets (especially things that are flavored vanilla, or shortbread cookies), mechanic work, and Lillian.
Kai hates booze, intoxicated people, crowds, filthy rooms, public bathrooms and changerooms.
Kai’s family + lore:
[Dave B], His father.
Kai was the result of a flimsy relationship. His mother and father decided to keep the baby, solely because they were too broke to afford an abortion. However, his mother left when Kai was about a year and a half old, and they ended up moving into a one bedroom apartment. The breakup, and now needing to take care of a ‘little brat’, caused Kai’s dad to start drinking more and more to cope, turning him from a guy who drank a beer a night, into a fully fledged alcoholic.
While Kai was always a quiet baby, losing his mother made him go silent. He stopped babbling, and would barely talk. This lead to him getting fed very little, and paid attention to even less. However, Kai’s dad was still sober enough at this time to at least feed Kai.
By the time Kai was 5 and going to school, his father would often forget to pick kai up until late into the evening, or drop kai off around noon, or not at all. Despite the teacher being annoyed, the habit never changed. At 7, Kai was completely forgotten at school during winter. He was found the next morning by Lillian’s mom, Lillith, and was brought to the ER. The bill was, thankfully, taken care of by the hospital, due to both the inability to reach Kai’s dad, and the lack of any money in the guys bank account. Lillith brought Kai home, and told kai’s dad off, before settling on picking kai up from school every day.
From then on, Kai learns how to walk from school on his own. His meals consist mostly of school lunches, and snacks from Lillians lunchbox, and dinners made by Lillith.
You might be asking– if they live in a one bedroom apartment, where does kai sleep? And well, despite Kai’s dad mostly residing in the living room, drinking, watching tv, and sleeping there, he never gave up his own bedroom. Instead, he cleared out the storage closet, tossed a mattress in there, and let kai sleep in there instead. Besides, the boy wasn’t that big back then, when he was like 5. By 13, however, the room started to become suffocating.
Kai’s father wasn’t all bad, however. The man still somewhat had a job, and Kai still could say a few fond memories he had with his dad. Like one christmas– where, despite his dad never celebrating any holiday– they sat on the couch and watched how’s it made together. It was peaceful. It flashes through kai’s mind everytime someone (Lillian) calls his father bad or abusive.
And, his dad gives him money. He hands Kai a couple 20 dollar bills every month, for clothes and food, in exchange for the boy staying quiet and behaving. Kai saves for new clothes, and shoes, and buys canned food for cheap to eat. Sometimes his dad saves him barfood, but by 12 he can no longer stomach chicken wings and peperoni pizza.
As kai gets into “middle school”, his father tends to end up more and more drunk. He comes home later and later, and well… Every time Kai sees his father, the chance of a bottle hitting his skin, or words being yelled at him, gets higher and higher. Kai never learns why his dads getting angrier, but he stops giving kai money and sometimes stays home more than he used to. Every wrong move gets him hit. And, when his dad gets busy and isn’t at home, Kai waits in a quiet fear for when he does. He feels numb, barely gets any sleep, and starts applying pressure to his skin.
Just shortly before Kai turns 15, at the start of ninth grade, Kai can’t take it anymore. He gets yelled at for coming home late, for coming home early, gets called a waste of space, food, and oxygen everytime his dad sees him. Kai tries to take his life, he can’t remember how, but he ends up being caught by a girl, and shortly after ends up in the hospital.
He stays there for awhile. What happens is a blur, but… all he knows is that afterwards? He doens’t see his dad again.
[ ], Kai’s grandmother.
Kai’s grandmother, or [Dave B.s] mother, hadn’t spoken to her son in over two decades. He was a brat, always confident that he knew what he was doing, and he HATED her. Used to steal from her wallet to buy beer as a teen, was always sleezy and a bit of a ‘playboy’, despite not being that attractive. He dropped contact in his early 20’s, and she never tried to contact him because Linda knew he wouldn’t want to hear it.
So, when one fateful October, she gets a call from the police, she’s confused. Less so when asked if she’s his mother. ‘Yes, but I haven’t talked to him in years. I always knew he’d end up in trouble– if he needs bail, the answers no.’
Her confusion, however, is replaced with surprise when she learns about Kai. Her grandson. Who, has apparently been neglected and abused for years and just tried to take his life. Apparently, her son never actually moved that far, and is still in the city. She’s never been quicker to go to the hospital. Kai seems dazed, and smaller than a boy his age should be. She agrees to take him in, and by the time hes out of the hospital, his stuffs already in a room.
She lives in a small, three bedroom home. The same home kai’s dad grew up in– but she doesn’t mention that to kai. Her husband passed away a couple years ago, so its just been her. He gets a nice, sizable room on the top floor. Lillian stays over on weekends and helps decorate the walls. Leaves his stuff behind, too.
Its here, where Kai gets his love for things. Computers, motorcycles, and most importantly– baking.
His grandma bakes with him. Its how they bond. And, once realizing that its all kai will eat (he can’t stand greasy food, and theres something about sugar that makes him feel at ease), it becomes almost a weekly tradition. Kai bakes as much as he can, and he gets a job at a motorshop just to buy better equipment for it.
Lillian Cain
Male, He/Him, 16-18 in lore, born 12/12/XX, Sagittarius, ENFP.
Voiceclaim?
Spongebob Squarepants - Spongebob Squarepants the Musical (played by Ethan Slater)
(Listen to Bikini Bottom Day from the musical)
Character warnings: Suicide (his mom, via hanging/noose), + Depression, isolation? And a passing mention of eating less (but not a full on ED)
Lillian, while he doesn’t care if he looks feminine, is a cis male. He is demi-rom and gay, only liking men (read, Kai) and never having an interest in anyone else.
Lillian, later on, gets depression + anxious attachment*, and he’s never quite himself without Kai by his side. He also tends to get told he has ‘ADHD’, but he’s never been diagnosed and he personally doesn’t see being energetic and silly meaning he has ADHD.
Appearance wise, Lillian is 5’6, with pale blonde hair and blue eyes. His hair’s always about shoulder length, and messily parted down the middle with his bangs swept out of his face and tucked behind his ears. He tends to tie it up in a messy ponytail. He’s skinny, albeit he used to have some chub on him prior to his mothers passing, and post that he’s been a bit more on the lean side. He’s always been active, however, and has strong upper and lower body strength.
His choice of clothing include: mostly hand me down and thrifted t-shirts. He’s rarely been one to buy new new clothes, and he’ll wear pretty much anything. Zip up hoodies over t-shirts or button downs, shorts, jeans, sweatpants, knit sweaters… He mostly wears blues and greens though, as they were his mothers favorite colors and what she bought often for him, but he was never too picky— that is, until she passed. Since then, its been hard to NOT see him in a blue or green sweater or shirt. He also has a silver chain with a lily flower charm on it that he doesn’t take off now, and he never will.
Lillian loves salty snacks, magic tricks and cards, parkour + gymnastics, jogging, and Kai.
Lillian hates rope, being serious, studying, and Kai not telling him how he feels.
Lillian’s Family (+ lore)
Lilith Cain
Lillian’s mother. She, at about 19, hooked up with a guy. When she told him she was pregnant, he dropped contact and she never heard from him again. Despite it being a difficult pregnancy, she kept the baby and promised to love and cherish it. She decided on the baby name Lillian, due to that being her favorite flower. However, the ultrasound she got told her it was a baby girl. When, she found out that it was a boy, she still decided to keep the name, as she was exhausted and didn’t have a second name in mind. She does not regret this decision, and Lillian loves his name.
She was a very kind and attentive mother. Despite living off of a nearly nothing paycheck, she did her best to keep her son clothed, fed, and happy. He didn’t end up with alot, but he loved every toy and stuffed animal he got. And he truly wasn’t a picky kid. Honestly, the boy was quiet and well behaved as a toddler for the most part. He’d sometimes throw small fits– not wanting a bath, not wanting to wear socks and shoes, ect. But overall? He’s a good kid, and a really cute one, too.
Yet, shes worried about kindergarten. While he plays with kids at daycare, he isn’t really ‘friend’s with any of them. Shes arranged playdates, but Lillian never seemed to really like them. However, she’s more than happy (and a little concerned) when Lillian befriends another quiet boy. Kai. However, the boy always seems to get picked up late.
However, Lillian’s talking. Nonstop chattering by middle school, and by highschool kai has to tell him when to shut up or else he just… wont. Which makes her happy, yes, but… Its never to her. Its always to Kai.
Just after Lillian turned 7, before winter break, Lillith finds kai in the morning at school, passed out and shivering beneath the playground. The ER trip is horrifying, and shes so relieved when Kai makes it. She’s never been one to get mad, but she tells his father off quite strongly. And, despite the police report being filed for neglect, nothing ever comes out of it. She starts taking care of Kai afterschool– makes sure he’s fed, clothed, and just hopes she can do enough for him. When Kai starts getting more and more bruised, she lets him spend the night and keeps patching him up. Shows him how to care for wounds. She had a few, too, see? Her childhood wasn’t great, either. But look at her. She’s happy now. She’s fine. He will be too.
...She regrets not doing more after Kai’s accident. It weighs heavy on her. The way Lillian’s heart snaps in two when she breaks the news stabs her in the gut. Lillith was the adult. She should’ve done more for the boy. She was practically his mother…
Lillith decides to try and take guardianship when she finds out his father is being charged this time. Yet, priority goes to family, first. And his grandmother says yes…
And Lillian. Lillian’s 17. Hes never home now. He stays late at school with kai, he goes to kai’s grandmothers on the weekends. Sometimes they come here, but Lillian just says that Kai’s grandma’s house is cooler. Its fun going to Kai’s house. She bakes cookies and makes a good dinner— Lilliths always busy working, so she never cooks.
It piles up. Eats away at her, slowly. Most nights are spent in her room alone, curled up and trying to cry– except the tears wont come. She was scared, as a kid. At the thought of dying. Yet now… it feels like the only way to relieve her heartache. The note gets written in advance. Apologizing to Kai for not doing more, to lillian for always being poor, for always having less, for never being enough of a mom.
The knot gets tied. She paces. She hesitates.
…Lillian comes home for once. Kai is in the parking lot with his grandmother. Lillian enters. Sees his mother hanging there. Kai was hesitating about going inside and saying hi, so his grandma hadn’t driven off yet. She tells him to go, he shakes his head no. And then lillians running out with tears in his eyes. 911’s called.
Lillian’s… inconsolable. Its the first time in years anyones seen him quiet. Kai is worried Lillian will hurt himself. He doesn’t really. He eats less, and shuts down, sure. Misses most of school during the spring, and Kai brings lillian work ‘home’, that really, Kai does most of just to make sure Lillian passes.
By summer, Lillian’s back to his ‘usual’ self on the outside. Smiling. Playful. Teasing. To anyone else, it seems like Lillian’s gotten over it well. Like he’s moved on. Kai knows better. Kai knows that, while technically, he’s supposed to be living with another family member, lillian hasn’t contacted any. That while, legally, he’s under his aunt and uncles care… he hasn’t stepped foot in that house more than once, maybe twice. That he clings to kai every night and, while he doesnt cry, he tosses and turns and breathes shakily and mumbles for his mom in such a pained voice. He knows that Lillian hates himself for being home less and less. That he wont look up at the ceiling anymore and flinches everytime he has to touch a rope.
